History of X-Tek
More than 20 years of innovation in X-ray and CT

Formed in 1986 by Roger Hadland, X-Tek Systems Ltd designed and developed real-time micro-focus and pulsed x-ray sources for a range of electronics, NDT and research applications. Since that time, through an extensive product development program, a range of standard products and inspection systems has been successfully developed.

X-Tek Group has evolved over 20 years to become the leading manufacturer of real-time, micro-focus x-ray inspection systems for quality control, research and failure analysis. The Group provides systems for a wide range of industries including; electronics, semiconductor, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical, medical plus many others and is continuously looking at new markets and opportunities.

In 2007, X-Tek became part of the Metris group, a leading worldwide total solution provider of innovative metrology systems.
X-Tek , now Metris, is unique in having the total system design and manufacture under direct control. Key developments include X-Tek’s unique and patented integrated x-ray source, Inspect-X system control and analysis software, and sample manipulators that outperform all competitors. The range of integrated micro-focus sources, now extended to 450kV, provides higher performance and is almost maintenance free compared to conventional micro-focus.

Today, pinpoint-sharp x-ray and CT images provide detailed insight into a fuel injector, turbine blade, plastic tooth wheel, medical implant, electronic connector and even lipstick. In Formula 1 racing, CT analysis is used for lifetime verification of key race car components. The same CT technology is used at the London Natural History Museum on natural specimens by the National Research Council Canada for investigation in titanium implants and by Norwegian Technical Institute (NGI) for analysis of rock samples. In an exciting link-up between high-tech industry and international universities, CT even helped resolve the complex mysteries of the famous 2000 year old Antikythera Mechanism.

For the investigation of electronics devices and printed circuit boards, X-Tek offers a line of dedicated X-ray and CT inspection systems that trace hidden defects, such as broken wire bonds, solder flow issues, thin copper traces and epoxy voids.
